Understand the benefit

Who gets the referral bonus?

The referrer, the new user, or both may benefit—and the two rewards do not have to be equal or even use the same form.

The short answer: read each side separately

A referral offer has two possible beneficiaries. The referrer is the existing customer whose link or code is used. The referred person—sometimes called the friend, invitee, guest, or referee—is the person opening the new account or trying the service.

Never assume the words “refer a friend” promise the same thing to both people. One side may earn cash while the other receives account credit, points, storage, a fee waiver, a discount, or no reward at all. The offer page should state each benefit and each person’s requirements.

A link can be valid without benefiting the new user

Attribution to the referrer and a welcome benefit for the new user are separate questions. Confirm both before choosing an offer.

Four common referral program shapes

Program shapeReferrer receivesNew user receivesWhat to watch
Two-sided, equalA stated rewardThe same stated rewardRequirements can still differ
Two-sided, unequalOne amount or reward typeA different amount or typeDo not advertise only the larger side
Referrer-onlyA reward after qualificationNo referral-specific benefitA public signup offer may be better for the newcomer
New-user-onlyNo direct rewardA discount, credit, or welcome benefitThe sharer may still have another relationship to disclose

“Both get a bonus” also does not mean both are paid at the same time. The new user might receive a discount immediately, while the referrer waits until a purchase, deposit, verification, or return window is complete.

Why referral rewards can be unequal

Programs often use each side’s reward for a different purpose. A new-user credit lowers the cost of trying the service. A referrer reward recognizes a completed introduction. That can produce different values, different forms, and different limits.

  • Different units: cash versus points, storage, service credit, or a waived fee.
  • Different milestones: signup for one side, a qualifying transaction for the other.
  • Different timing: instant application versus a later posting or payout date.
  • Different caps: the referrer may have an annual limit even when the newcomer’s offer remains available.
  • Personalized offers: the referrer’s active offer or region may affect the reward shown.

If you want to compare a referral with a public welcome deal, use the separate referral offer versus signup offer framework. If you are trying to combine layers, read the stacking guide instead.

What current official programs show

These official examples were checked September 12, 2026. They illustrate program shapes; the live offer in the provider’s app or terms controls.

Chime: both benefit, but the rewards can differ

Chime’s standard referral help says both people earn a bonus after the friend uses the referral link and completes the stated qualifying steps. It also says the friend’s current bonus is specified while the referrer’s amount may vary based on the active offer at enrollment. Official Chime referral overview.

Wise: discount for the guest, reward for the inviter

Wise says its programs are assigned by region. A guest may receive a free-transfer discount or a choice that includes a free card, depending on region, while the inviter earns a reward only after referred users qualify. Official Wise standard invite guide.

Dropbox: both receive storage, not cash

Dropbox says an eligible new user and the referrer can both receive extra storage after the required signup, desktop installation, login, and email verification steps. The referrer’s storage amount can depend on plan type. Official Dropbox referral instructions.

Fetch and Rakuten: both benefit after a qualifying action

Fetch says both people receive points after the new user enters the code and snaps a receipt. Rakuten says both can earn a reward when the new member uses the referral method and completes a qualifying purchase, while amounts can change. Official Fetch referral guide and official Rakuten Refer-A-Friend FAQ.

Verify five things in the official terms

  1. Who receives something? Find separate language for the referrer and new user.
  2. What is each reward? Record amount, unit, restrictions, and whether “up to” changes the promise.
  3. What must each person do? Note signup, transaction, deposit, verification, installation, or other milestones.
  4. When does it post? Separate the qualification period from review and payout timing.
  5. What can disqualify it? Check new-user status, region, account market, payment method, returns, limits, and incompatible offers.

Save the dated offer page before signup. If a reward later appears missing, the missing or pending bonus checklist helps trace the exact milestone.

How this relates to Everette Affiliate listings

An Everette Affiliate listing helps you find a community-submitted referral link or code for a supported company. It does not set the benefit, verify personal eligibility, or issue the reward. Follow the listing to the provider, then compare the live terms with the framework above.

Check whether the referral works in your account market with the country-restrictions guide, and confirm every deadline with the four referral expiration dates.
