Timing matters

Can you add a referral code after signing up?

Sometimes—but only when the program leaves a specific window open. Many companies attach referrals during signup and will not add one later.

The short answer: check before your first qualifying action

A company can recognize a referral at one of three points: when you open the invitation, when you create the account, or when you enter a code before a first-use deadline. If its rules require the first or second path, support may not be able to attach a referrer after signup.

Open the company’s official app or help center immediately. Look for Refer a Friend, Invite Code, Promotions, Rewards, or an offer area in your profile. If a field is available, read the nearby terms before entering anything. A visible field does not guarantee that every referral offer is eligible there.

Do not assume “after signup” means “too late”

Some programs keep eligibility open until a first receipt, first trip, or another clearly defined action. The cutoff—not the age of the account alone—is what matters.

The most common referral cutoffs

  • Referral link opened before account creation. Attribution is recorded as part of the signup flow.
  • Code entered before registration finishes. Leaving the field blank may make the choice final.
  • Code entered before first use. A new account may still have a short opportunity before its first purchase, trip, receipt, transfer, or other qualifying action.
  • Offer deadline after signup. The referral may be attached, but the required action must happen within a separate number of days.

The signup cutoff and the reward deadline are not the same. A code might already be attached while the account still has work to do. Use the four-deadline framework to separate them. If the referral appears active but no reward has posted, go to the missing or pending bonus guide.

What current official guidance says

These examples reflect official US help pages checked September 12, 2026. Offers and interfaces can change, so verify the terms shown in your account.

Fetch: yes, before the first receipt

Fetch says a new user can enter a referral code after creating an account as long as they have not submitted their first receipt. Its documented paths include Profile, Refer a Friend, then Enter an Invite Code, or Profile and Enter Referral Code. If the option is absent, Fetch says the account may already have a code or be waiting for the first receipt to process. Official Fetch instructions.

Chime: no retroactive standard referral

Chime says a friend who has already opened an account without the referral link cannot add the referral afterward. Its standard referral is attached through the personal invitation link, followed by the offer’s qualifying steps. Official Chime referral-link help.

Coinbase: affiliate attribution is not retroactive

Coinbase’s affiliate and referral bonus help says affiliate attribution is captured during signup and cannot be applied retroactively. Its simple referral program likewise directs a new customer to sign up through the personal link and then complete the eligible action. Official Coinbase affiliate guidance and simple referral help.

Dropbox: the invitation starts the process

Dropbox requires the invited person to click the referral invitation and complete the account, desktop app, and email-verification steps. Its guidance marks an already-existing Dropbox account as ineligible rather than offering a late code field. Official Dropbox referral guidance.

Rakuten: signup must use the referral method

Rakuten’s referral terms require a new member to join through the unique referral link or another method the program provides, then make the qualifying purchase in the applicable period. The terms do not promise after-the-fact attribution. Official Rakuten referral terms.

Uber rider promotions: a limited pre-first-trip window may exist

Uber’s rider promotion FAQ says many promotion codes are limited to new users and that only one new-user promotion may be added before the first trip. That is a promotion rule, not a guarantee that every Uber referral can be attached after account creation. Use the Promotions area and the exact terms shown for the code. Official Uber rider promotion FAQ.

What to do if you already signed up

  1. Pause before completing a first purchase, receipt, trip, deposit, or other qualifying action.
  2. Check the official app for a referral or promotion field and read its eligibility text.
  3. Review the company’s current referral help page for a late-entry window.
  4. If the documentation is unclear, ask official support whether the account is still eligible before entering a code.
  5. Keep the support answer and a screenshot of the offer. Do not treat a verbal promise from the referrer as provider approval.

Do not try to manufacture eligibility

Do not open duplicate accounts, use someone else’s identity or device, erase transaction history, or ask support to misstate the signup path. Those actions may violate terms and can cause the referral, the new account, or both parties’ accounts to be disqualified.

If the deadline has passed, ask the company whether another public promotion is legitimately available. A promo code may have different rules, but it should not be presented as the same referral. See whether referral, promo, and cashback offers can combine.

Before your next signup

Open the referral from a source you trust, confirm the official destination and current terms, save a screenshot, and finish the intended signup flow without switching offer pages. Our legitimate referral guide provides a security-focused checklist.

Before you continue

Check the destination and the deadline.

A valid-looking code is only useful when the official program still accepts it.
